The placebo effect of good UX

Expectation shapes outcome in medicine and interfaces alike. What pharmacy taught me about designing for trust, not just function.

Pharmacy students learn about the placebo effect early: expectation measurably changes outcomes. The pill's colour affects its perceived efficacy. The prescriber's confidence affects the patient's report. I never expected to find the same law governing software, but it does — and understanding it changed how I design.

The software placebo

Perceived speed is speed. A progress bar, an optimistic UI update, a skeleton screen — the actual milliseconds barely change, but the experience transforms. Users rate responsive-feeling apps as better products, not just faster ones.

Design signals competence. A polished interface makes users trust the invisible parts: their data, their payments, their privacy. Two functionally identical products differ in retention based on how much care the surface communicates. The surface is evidence.

Labels change behaviour. Pharmacy knows a drug described as "strong" is experienced as strong. Software: a field labelled "recovery code (emailed to you)" gets filled correctly more often than "code." Wording is dosage.

The ethics, which matter

Placebo in medicine has ethical guardrails: no deception, no harm, informed consent. Software needs the same. The line I hold: design for honest trust — make real quality legible. Never fake progress, fake data, fake testimonials. The placebo of good UX is belief earned by real substance, presented well. That's not manipulation. That's packaging the truth so it gets received.
